You can’t go wrong with this Herringbone hot pad pattern. Zigzags are always fun and with some bright fabrics something fresh and colorful for the kitchen. A perfect time of year to use holiday fabric for Chrisrmas. One charm makes four and there’s even a left over strip to get you started sewing the next set! Better yet, the hot pad is self binding. What a time saver. A quick make for Christmas gifts, teacher gifts, and even some for yourself. It’s always nice to have something new in the kitchen for Christmas and these sew up in 60 minutes.

If you can’t resist charm squares then you probably have a whole heap to use up. Charm squares are perfect for these hot pads. The hardest part is picking out your favorite when you love them all.

Mel from Melanie Dramatic suggests making a rectangle shape zigzag block and making  a mug rug. The technique is the same, it’s just about adjusting the amount of zigzags, make one row instead of two and you have fun mug rug.These zigzags are so easy, anyone can make them.

To make the mug rug, simply make one zigzag row.

Use the blocks to make a quilt top too.

For the backing you’ll need 1 yard or four 14″ x 14″ squares of fabric. 1/2 yard of batting , or ten 10″ squares, and 1/2 yard of Insul Brite or four 10 x 10″ squares.

The hot pad may seem a little thick. Be sure to use thin batting for the other two layers. if in doubt, do a tiny test sandwich to see if your machine can handle it.Use a 3 1/2 inch stitch length, and a walking foot for the quilting, and should be good to go!
