Churn Dash Quilt Sparkles With The Addition Of Stars

The Border Can Be Plain Or Pieced.

The simplicity of the layout makes the Churn Dash a favorite. Sprinkle the quilt with accent stars and create a new pattern. There are lots of fun variations and it can be used for traditional quilts and modern quilts with the same amount of charm.

Make the churn dash in a single color and go scrappy for the rest. The star is an easy addition using 5 four patch blocks combined with star points.

Marti Mitchell Peaky and Spike templates

The quilt is shown in three colors but you can make it scrappy by using lots of reds, blues, along with creams, tans or any other color combination. A three color version is striking and defines the design, it’s fun to see how it forms circles. If desired, the quilt can be finished with plain borders, or pieced.

The addition of the star makes this a great Quilt of Valor. Star points can be paper pieced using Marti Mitchell’s Peaky and Spike templates, or cut from the Triangle in a Square die from Accuquilt. You will need a variety of red and white strips cut 2 inches, which will be used for the Churn Dash blocks and the 4 patches in the star blocks. Make a variety of strips sets sewing one red to one white fabric. Use blue and white for the stars.

The combo of the tri-recs peaky stars and the HST in the churn dash creates the circle without any curved seams. If you haven’t yet tried making the churn dash with stars you will love how the blocks go together. The finished block size is 9 inches. Make any size quilt by the amount of blocks used.

There is a free pattern for the Churn Dash Stars designed by Mary’s Quilts. You can use the paper piece patterns provided to make the star points. The finished size of the quilt is approximately 57 inches x 57 inches.
