If you want a quilt that is simple but graphic, the Herringbone is just right. This pattern is so versatile you could use any fabric to make this quilt and it is destined to be perfect. Even though it may seem challenging, it is beginner friendly, especially the quilting part. The design is modern and clean, for any age. You might find it a little easier to do the quilting using a quilting bar to follow the herringbone line.
To make this striking quilt, use solids in coral and fresh white for the zig zag, and co-ordinate a floral for the backing. Charm squares can easily be used for half square triangles for a herringbone quilt, but for this quilt Persia Lou cut her own fabric and made the hst’s larger. That means fewer squares to piece, and easier to quilt!
Cut the squares 8″ x 8″ Make the half square triangles super quick without cutting half square triangles! Put one coral and one white together. Draw a diagonal line. Then sew the two squares together 1/4″ either side of the line. Then cut on the diagonal line. In no time you have a pile of squares ready for your herringbone!
Piece the squares and baste. For the quilting start with stitching in the ditch. Next quilt on either side of each zig zag. Use a quilting bar to do the next quilting line, by running the quilting bar along the previous line of stitching. The entire quilt was quilted on this domestic Singer sewing machine. It’s the Singer 9960 Quantum Stylist 600… I’m in love!

The ‘Herringbone’ quilting follows the line of the chevron, is so much easier and more accurate to do using the quilting bar as a guide. Using the half square triangle technique and the straight line quilting even beginners can make this striking quilt.
