If you’re just learning how to quilt, or looking for a way to use up your fabric scraps, this wintry Cardinal is a darling project, made up in three sections. A lovely winter scene has been machine appliqued and quilted on blue and white snow flurry cotton fabric, and finished with solid dark blue piping. Make the center piece for an awkward or small wall space that’s too narrow for anything, but would make the world of difference to the room. A sweet Cardinal mini sews up quick and makes a delightful gift.

 

Each panel is six inches wide and 15 3/4 inches long. Add a six inch snowflake hanger if making the Cardinal mini for a gift. Templates for the bird and holly are provided with the pattern, with template pieces letter based in the order they should be layered in. Start with the beak, then the birds body and so on until all templates are positioned. It’s very rewarding to see the applique come together and it’s easy to do. The bird is so beautiful. Fuse to the background fabric and applique with an easy button hole or blanket stitch, or applique of your choice. Meander a snow swirl for the background.
