Fabric Bliss Flying Geese Quilt

Choose Your Fabric Combo’s, Stitch 4 Flying Geese Blocks With No Waste

Flying geese have so much movement all the while presented in a simple repeated block. If you’ve been wanting to cut into a new stack of fabrics, these super easy blocks turn into a colorful quilt to snuggle under in no time. Make any size quilt by the number of blocks used.

To get started make stacks of fabrics you might like to pair together, one dark and one light. Triangle scraps can be tricky, however while planning colors, you could get a ton of use from scraps that could yield 4″ wide strips.

A super time saver when cutting is to cut the 4″ wide strips the entire width of the fabric and start cutting for 3″ x 6″ flying geese using this Fons & Porter Flying Geese Ruler. The ruler sizes offered range from 1″ x 2″ to 4″ x 8″ blocks so you can make any size quilt. It makes the cutting for flying geese easy and flexible.

Rachel Hauser of Stitched In Color explains that you can use the same strips for the geese part of the block or the background part of the block.  Plus, the notched triangle points that result from using the ruler promote accuracy so there’s almost no need to trim up blocks before joining.

However the flying geese ruler is not essential to make your flying geese blocks. Try this quick method that yields 4 flying geese blocks with no waste. A ‘Make-Em Fast” free tutorial that shows 2 methods, which you can find here.

In no time there are batches of flying geese, ready to lay out horizontally, or vertically, as you choose. No need for additional strips to make an all-geese quilt! Use any fabric for any season to make this fun quilt. Diane Perin from Going To Pieces used polka dot fabric for her striking flying geese!
