When sewing, it helps to use a walking foot and a slightly longer stitch length, as flannel can stretch a bit more than quilting cotton. Pressing seams open and using light starch keeps everything crisp and neat.

If opting for flannel, to keep the quilt soft Melissa Cory of Happy Quilting Melissa suggests a large scale simple meandering design.

A walking foot can help feed the layers evenly, especially when quilting multiple flannel layers together. Press seams carefully, rather than dragging the iron, lift and press to avoid distortion. A light spray of starch or pressing spray can help keep edges crisp and manageable throughout the process.

Because flannel it’s thicker and can stretch slightly on the bias, and if using yardage, it’s best to prewash flannel before cutting which helps prevent shrinkage and removes any loose fibers. A sharp rotary cutter and new needle (size 90/14 works well) ensures clean cuts and smooth seams.
