A Colorful Nine Patch Garden For The New Season

Make Your Own Honey Bee Lap Quilt With Scraps

A simple nine patch becomes a colorful Honey Bee lap quilt with a patchwork border. The blocks sew up quickly and using your machine to applique the bees down, saves a ton of time!

The quilt top is super simple made up entirely of nine patch blocks. A terrific jelly roll quilt, and scrap buster! Two color blocks create each  ‘garden patch’ attracting Honey bees. If you don’t get to much machine applique, you’ll get enough therapy from this one. It’s rewarding, to see the ‘bees’  bring texture to the block.

You’ll end up with twelve blocks in total. Three across and four down. Lay them out on the floor or a large workspace area, and move the blocks around until you’re totally happy with your color combinations and special design.

Sew the blocks together, and secure the bees with machine applique. The border design has no repeat. Go scrappy using up any mix of 2 1/2″ squares, and place them without having too much of one color grouped together. The small blocks in the border fall quite randomly, and the whole quilt just works beautifully.

The Honey Bee quilt, designed by Erin of Why Not Sew Quilts, provides some easy applique methods, and honey bee templates in her free pattern tutorial.
