Autumn Leaves Mugrugs Capture The Golds Of Autumn
Autumn Leaves Mugrugs Hold Onto The Beauty Of Autumn A little Longer
Springtime is for fun in the sun and seaside good times. Everyone loves spring. But Autumn has a special hold. It might be the greens and golds of Autumn, with spectacular bursts of burnt orange that is so appealing. Why not catch and hold onto the beauty of Autumn a little longer with these autumn leaves mugrugs.
Make a set of four small potholders as Olga did, which are perfect as mug rugs. Great scrap project so start sorting through and matching up the warm golds, moss greens and orange prints and solids.
The leaves mug rug pattern is really taken from a potholder pattern and simply used as mug rugs. It works well though, the smallest of the three sizes makes a great mug rug. While the pattern is the same, each has a different look with and without quilting the leaves.
Here’s what you’ll need to make two mug rugs. For autumn leaves you would want fall colors, but these mug rugs would be great all year round so choose any color fabric from your stash.
Cut or find strips that are 1 to 2.5 inches wide and approx 14 inches long. Some slightly shorter strips could be used for the ends.
Once strips are sewn cut 60 degree angles and stitch to form the ‘V’ in the fabric strips.
Cut a rough leaf pattern.
Layer with batting and backing fabric.
Quilt using a complementary thread color and walking foot to mimic the straight center “vein”. After that, gradual swirls from the center to the outside give the movement of the leaf veins. In the end it will look just like a leaf!
When you are finished, lay your leaf pattern on top and cut the leaf out.
Follow the steps in the easy tutorial for the binding too.

Here is the same pattern with a puffy binding and a buttoned loop. This leaves mugrug is also taken from a potholder pattern with a set of three different sizes. The smallest used as a mugrug has a bit of a trendy look with the puffy binding and chunky buttoned loop.
This is the pattern that Olga used to make her autumn leaves mugrugs. She adapted hers a little. Both projects are equally as nice.
The Leaf potholder pattern with the puffy binding is available for purchase.
