Fall in love with fabric then choose a quilt pattern, or fall in love with a design and choose the fabric. Whichever way it happens this Stepping Stones quilt block offers fabric choices any which way you would like to display the design.

 

White is used for the background creating a large negative space. The blocks become distinct and the design is crisp and clear. I love the freshness of the quilt with a clean white background. Or choose the opposite where more color is put on display by using prints for the background, and white or a solid for the star blocks. It’s fun to play around with placement and see such different results! The quilt could easily be made for a different season by simply swapping out blocks and backgrounds with fabric choices.

If it’s too hard to choose you’ll have to make both! The blocks are so easy to construct and especially quick using a piece of tape for the piecing.

Blocks are neat and crisp using a scant 1/4″ seam allowance, which you can read about here. The finished block size is 10 1/2″ square. A finished quilt requires 20 blocks rendering a quilt top of 41″ x 51″.

 

The designer, Lorna from Sew Fresh Quilts provides instructions for 40” x 50” quilt or 60” x 75” quilt in both Positive and Negative settings!
