The feature butterfly block is 5.5″ square, is foundation pieced, not appliqued. These little foundation paper pieced blocks measure 5.5″ after piecing and can be used as a 5″ finished square, or trimmed to 5″ for a 4.5″ finished square, making them perfect for mixing with any 5″ charm projects. Foundation piecing your own charm square is super fun. The butterfly requires the smallest pieces of fabric, yet you could still choose prints that suggest the prettiest wings!

You can replace any section of this pattern with a different patchwork design or solid piece of fabric. Use a favorite print in place of the butterfly panel, then put together fabric pieces that coordinate well for the selvedge pockets.

The pocket panel is created by first piecing the main row of pocket fabrics, then adding the secondary pockets on top using trim to hold them in place. The shorter pockets in front are for small tools like the seam ripper and tape measure so they don’t bury too far down to easily reach.

Embellish the thread catcher with trim of your choice, the pattern includes the use of fusible fleece and Shapeflex interfacing, so the detachable basket wont flop over.

The sewing mat with pockets, designed by Nicole of Lillyella Stitchery, is a finished size of 20″ wide and 23″ tall. The free pattern includes notes on how to simplify and customize the design and pocket sizes, and how to choose fabric where pieces will be partially covered with a secondary pocket.
