Choose a layer cake to suit the project. A ten inch square is enough to make one star, with a little fabric for the background. Six layer cake squares make up the stars, then use the remaining layer cake, cut into 5 inch squares.

Or find a basketful of left over charms / 5 inch squares, to complete the quilt with 144 x 5 inch squares.
