As winter days get shorter and spring is in the air, it’s a whole new take on colors and design. Summer is light and bright with fresh new colors starting with spring, and quilt designs become bold showing off floral prints and rainbow hues. It’s great to pull up the blinds and gleaming rays of sunlight splash across your new sunkissed quilt.
The open design of these simple squares provide a free spirited choice of fabric and placement. Almost any color will work. Throw caution to wind with placement. The quilt is designed around a charm pack and jelly roll with the addition of a little yardage.
Choose summer crazy colors of lime green, orange and pink with small to medium florals in between. Add yellow and lilac with turquoise and lime green plaid. Anything goes for summer. The squares are made up with a charm square in the middle with 5″ and 9″ strips for the box borders. Use small scraps to make one or two surprise flower appliques placed randomly amongst the colorful squares.
Use similar colors which can easily be wielded from scraps and left over fabric pieces. Find left over charms in dizzy prints, tiny white flowers against red, small golden yellow flowers, and even a dark orange stripey print. Just put it altogether and create your own sunkissed squares.
Use bright white for the middle border and frame with two orange strips setting the stage for the applique flower. Scrap fabric pieces in pink and red check fabric for the flower with lime green for the stems and leaves for the feature of this quilt, adding a layer of batting to puff the trapunto and secure with raw edge applique.
Keep all left over cuts and fabric bits to make a matching and really quick to make 14 1/2″ x 14 1/2″ table topper. Something new and fresh for your summer decor.
