Shop Fabric With This Dashing Batik Log Cabin Tote
Batik Fabric Strips Make Up This Spacious Log Cabin Tote.
Make this stylish tote with a log cabin design. The tote is made using 2″ Batik fabric strips carefully selected for the layout. Co-ordinated teal and blues on one side and brown and tan batiks on the opposite side create a striking contrast. Choose your colors in Batik or any other fabric of your choice since the log cabin block offers a myriad of choices for color ways.
Most of the cutting is 2″ strips. The center square on this tote is the eye catcher, and pulls on every glint of amber running through the batik.
Choose seasonal colors, or theme colors such as a beach tote. Once the log cabin block is made, add a broad strip on top for both the front and back of the bag. Layer and stitch together sides and bottom of the bag. Stitch corners to shape a flat bottom for the bag. I love the fact that the bag stands on it’s own and doesn’t flop over.
The log cabin block makes the body quite firm. Then layered with batting (and lining) makes it even more sturdy.
The selection of Batik fabric is mostly half yards. Perhaps you have batiks already in your stash and/or fabric scraps. Here are the fabric requirements for the entire project to help planning.
1/2 yard total assorted brown and tan batiks (bag body)
1/2 yard total assorted teal and blue batiks (bag body)
1/4 yard brown-and-turquoise batik (bag band, straps)
5/8 yard dark brown batik (bag and strap lining)
7/8 yard of 22″-wide heavyweight fusible interfacing
The tote finishes at 8″ x 131/2″ by 4″ making it perfect to shop fabric!! This log cabin tote pattern is available free from All people Quilt Magazine
