Batik Pumpkins Table Runner In Pieced Patchwork and A Little Applique

Pumpkin Patchwork Beautiful In Batiks.

Autumn batiks seem nicest for these delicious pumpkins and are just too adorable to only come out for fall. The pumpkins are pieced patchwork and then appliqued, along with a stem and leaf. 14 jelly strips or enough scraps to cut out 100 x 2 1/2″ squares and you’ll have a pumpkin table runner to display for the fall through to Thanksgiving.

 

Batiks create a rich autumn hue. Gather a mix of orange prints from scraps and capture the same effect adding a couple of batik pieces in the mix. Scraps only need to be big enough to cut out 2 1/2″ squares. Made up of 5 rows of 2 1/2″ squares, in no time four pumpkins are ready to make a table runner. The pumpkin, leaves, and stem are appliquéd with either a satin stitch, blanket stitch, or blind hem stitched around the raw edges by machine. Use the pumpkins for all sorts of autumn projects.

Raw edge machine appliqué using a blanket stitch is quick and easy and requires very little practice to achieve a finished edge. For a completely finished edge, use blanket stitch done either by machine or by hand, with the edges turned under. A great free applique tutorial can be found here that won’t hold you up in the making of the runner. Use homespun plaid for the sashing, and cut on the bias for the binding make the perfect frame.

The completed table runner size is 12-1/2″ x 53″, and can be made shorter or longer by adjusting the amount of pumpkins.
