O Christmas Tree An Heirloom Quilt To Last

A Traditional Christmas Quilt With A Twist

You’ll delight in putting up this traditional style tree quilt year after year. A timeless design that will work with any decor. Beginner friendly shoofly blocks with your choice of fabric to provide the ornaments, twinkle against a snowy white background. You could leave this soothing Tree quilt on the wall till winters ends.

The traditional Shoo Fly quilt block is perfect for beginning quilters, or for any quilter who want to create a quick quilt. The block corners are made from half square triangles, the 2 1/2″ center square could be fussy cut if you so choose. The block’s 6″ x 6″ size makes it suitable for this tree. Turned on point to stagger the green and white blocks, it quickly takes on a real tree shape. Quilting the white spaces to create a beautiful flurry!

To speed up construction you could use a quick piecing method that pairs two squares to make half-square triangle units for the Shoo Fly block’s corners, complete the block, and then a fast assembly of 15 blocks to make the tree, and a finished size quilt of 35″ x 39″. For a quilt block I have not sewn before, I often find a quick visual of the construction of the block provides me with all the confidence I need to get started. If you have never attempted a shoofly quilt block before, why not give it try using a simple technique which you will find here.

For the fabric… forest green is crisp against a white background, or choose prints that will display red and green glints. Any traditional holiday fabric will do, or choose your own colors. Small bits of fabric for the block make up the color, and are quick and easy to work with. There’s more than a good chance that there are a lot of green scraps from left over projects right through the year! A beautiful quilt to put a bag of green scraps to good use.
